Coyote Creek Parkway

Brief Description
The Coyote Creek Parkway, south of San Jose, provides an excellent place to ride in a natural open space setting. The paved trail, 15 miles one way, is a great place to ride and improve endurance or to simply admire the peaceful scenery. The trail connects some of the best parks south of San Jose, such as Coyote Hellyer County Park, Coyote Creek Park, and others. The mostly level trail provides a great experience for family cyclists.

Length: About 30 miles round trip.
Hours: 8:00 A.M. to sunset
Trail Conditions: The trail is paved and mostly level, with a few occasional rolling hills. The northern section of the trail between Metcalf Park and Coyote Hellyer County Park has some bumpy areas due to tree roots pushing up the pavement. The trail south of Metcalf Park is in good condition and smooth. The entire trail permits two-way travel.
Cost: $4 parking fee at Coyote Hellyer County Park and Coyote Creek Park. Free elsewhere.

Location

The Coyote Creek Parkway is just minutes south of downtown San Jose. Covering about 15 miles one-way, the Coyote Creek Parkway parallels highway 101 with pleasant rolling hills and open space of the southern Santa Clara Valley.

Parking is available at Coyote Hellyer County Park at the northern end of the trail. A $4 entrance fee is collected at Coyote Hellyer County Park.

Anderson Lake County Park is a great place to start at the south end of the trail. Parking is free and trail access is adjacent to the parking lot.

Free parking is available towards the middle section of the trail, such as Shady Oaks Park, Medcalf Park, and Parkway Lakes.

Things To Consider
  • The trail can be very warm during the summer months.
  • The maximum speed limit along the trail is 15 MPH.
  • There are a few rest stops along the trail that provide great places for a peaceful picnic.
  • The trail is usually clear of trail congestion, making it a great place to ride at your own pace.
  • Some places of the trail may be closed immediately after heavy rain due to flooding from small streams.
  • The northern section of the trail between Coyote Hellyer County Park and Metcalf Park contains some bumps along the trail.
  • The Coyote Creek Parkway has growth of poison oak off the path in wooded sections. Always avoid contact with poison oak since it causes skin irritation and a rash.
