The road bikes are designed for riding
on city streets and highways. Road bike frames range from cro-moly to aluminum
to carbon fiber. They have dropped handlebars providing a more aerodynamic
ride than mountain or hybrid bikes. They also have narrow, high-pressure
tires which help you speed down the road with less resistance than the
wider tires of hybrid or mountain bikes.
Road bikes come with a variety of gearing. Racing road bikes have double chainrings while sport and touring road bikes have triple chainrings. Racing road bikes have a shorter wheelbase than sport or touring road bikes. Touring bikes can be outfitted with front and rear racks and panniers to carry everything you need for self-contained or credit card touring. Road bikes have down tube shifters, STI shifters, or bar end shifters. Some models have a front suspension. High-end road bike usually come with clipless pedals.
